Brigadier General Daniel "David" Lewis Cushing

Youngest son of Theophilus Cushing and Hannah Lewis, grandson of Captain Nehemiah Cushing and Sarah Nichols, Reverend Daniel Lewis and Mary Maxson.

Daniel Lewis Cushing first married Zeruiah Chamberlain, daughter of Job Chamberlain and Rachel Bonney on 22 Nov 1787 in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts.They had five children:
* Ethan Allen Cushing 1788-1790
* Theophilus Cushing 1791-1869
* Nathan Cushing 1793-1872
* Daniel Cushing 1794-1876
* Ethan Allen Cushing 1799-1879

In 1801 Daniel Lewis Cushing moved to New York City and married secondly to Margaret Van Horne, daughter of William Van Horne and Lavinia Budd. They had five children:
* Hon William Van Horne Cushing 1803-1837
* Anna Cushing, Mrs Washington Lawrence b 1805
* Hon Courtland Cushing 1809-1856
* Hannah Lewis Cushing, Mrs John McFadden Gallagher 1811-1868
* Clara Corwin Cushing, Mrs John W Taylor 1815-1868

Daniel was a merchant in New York until 1806 when he moved to the northern part of New York State (Sackett's Harbor) and there took up a tract of land and laid out a town, naming it Huron. In December 1807, he went to Lebanon, Ohio, where he made a position for himself.

Military: He was commissioned, 25 May, 1811, Brigadier General of the 2nd Brigade, Ohio Militia. On 14 July, 1812, he received the appointment of Captain of Artillery in the U.S. Army under Gen. Harrison; and on 12 May, 1814, was made Captain of the U.S. Artillery. He served at Franklington, Ohio, and was drowned 29 March, 1815, while crossing the Auglaize River on his march to Fort Meigs, and was buried at Fort Defiance.
