He was born February 8, 1915, in Escalante, Utah. He was the eldest son of Edwin Ray and Mary Alexie Roundy Shurtz. He married his sweetheart Retha Wilcock, June 3, 1936, in the St. George LDS Temple. She preceded him in death February 19, 1985.Beryl attended BAC and BYU. He owned and operated Shurtz Plumbing since 1936, installing the first in-door plumbing in Escalante. For over half a century his friendly smile and his pickup truck were familiar to many. Beryl was a devoted cattleman who love the Escalante country and made many friends. He loved his family and enjoyed entertaining and dancing.
He is survived by his children, Beryl Carlyle (Barbara) Shurtz, Sandy; Marilyn (Thomas) Jackson, Escalante; brother, Doyle Park (LoRee) Shurtz, Bountiful; sisters, Vivian (Steve) Collard, Bountiful; Betty (Blake) Schow, Salt Lake City; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by wife; parents; daughter, Cleo; brother, Chase Shurtz.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, June 19, 1999, at 1 p.m. in the Escalante Cemetery. Friends may call at the Stake Center in Escalante on Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Escalante Cemetery. Funeral Directors, Neal S. Magleby & Sons Mortuary, Richfield, UT
