Memorial service for retired Lt. Col. Charles A. Adamson, 78, rural Lawton, will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Becker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Ken Overturf, pastor, Southside Baptist Church, Fort Smith, Ark., and former pastor of Paradise Valley Baptist Church, officiating.
Lt. Col. Adamson died Monday, May 18, 2009, at his home.
Inurnment with military honors will be at Fort Sill National Cemetery, Elgin.
He was born March 9, 1931, in Batesville, Ark., to Lloyd and Lealer Cecil Rory Adamson. He married Reta Boren on June 4, 1950, in Pampa, Texas. She died Sept. 18, 2007, in Lawton. He was a member of the National Guard for several years beforejoining the Army. He earned the Parachute Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Two Overseas Bars, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with 20 Device, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Meritorious Service Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal. He was a member of Paradise Valley Baptist Church, where he was a head usher and a Sunday School teacher for the 5th- and 6th-grade classes for four years. He was also a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and the Stoney Point Rod and Gun Club, where he served as president for several years. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a gun safety instructor. He and his wife owned a gunsmith shop.
Survivors include four daughters and two sons-in-law: Lela V. Smith, San Diego; Arlene and Bob Benton, Lawton; Barbara Ann and Michael Kiggins, Rock Springs, Wyo.; and Terri Lee Adamson, Guatay, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and their spouses: Douglas Smith, Graham Smith, Jeremy and Jenn Smith, Beau Brehler, Stephanie and Michael Brown, Cinda Kiggins, Tony Rinelli, Bradley Mayberry, Kristi Mayberry, Stuart Mayberry, Amber Renee Anglin and Brett, and Candace and Seth Schoolcraft; nine great-grandchildren: Joshua Smith, Gracie Brehler, Alexia Brown, Evan Brown, Baylee and Taylor Kiggins, Cloe and Connor Benton, and Riley Ann Smith; and three siblings: Gerald Adamson, Oklahoma City; Jean Kroll, Hershey, Ill.; and Francis VonGaltezell, Marriott Island, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Muriel Adamson; and a great-granddaughter, Kali Brehler.
