Heart Attack is Fatal to Lawyer

Thomas Jefferson Karnes former postmaster and attorney of Georgetown died unexpectedly here later Saturday afternoon of a heart attack while he was driving his are on the highway in front of Elmwood Cemetery.

He was out riding with his granddaughter Miss Carmel Karnes when he suddenly slumped over the steering wheel. She immediately switched off the motor and summoned aid but he was dead when physicians reached him.

Funeral services were held at the residence at 11 o'clock Monday with the Rev HLF Shuler pastor of Duncan Memorial Methodist Church officiating. Interment was made in Elmwood Cemetery.

Mr Karnes was a native of Indiana and had been a practicing attorney in Georgetown for more than twenty years. He served as postmaster here from 1922 until 1931 under Republican administrations. He had only recently announced his candidacy for magistrate at Georgetown and was beginning an intensive campaign.

He was born February 20 187 and raised on a farm in Indiana. Mr Karnes taught in country schools and college. He received his LLB degree in 1900 and his AB and BS degrees in 1911. He also took post graduated courses in ethics economics and sociology in 1912. During his term as postmaster here he secured a greatly improved rural service and more mail routes coming into the city.

He was the son of TJ and Mrs Margaret Cheunault Karnes. Surviving are the widow the former Miss Estella Mae Price a son Kenneth Karnes of Tuscon Arizona and three grandchildren Carmel, Thomas Jr Jr and Sharon.

Also surviving are three sisters Mrs JE Thomas Benton Ill Mrs Sam Barnes Danville Ill and Mrs WE Butler Harrisburg Ill.
