Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. An 1828 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he was posted to the 5th United States Infantry. He served on the frontier and in coastal garrison duty until 1838, when he was promoted Captain and transferred to the Quartermaster Department. He would served as a quartermaster during his pre-Civil War career in various posts and depots throughout the United States. When the Civil War began he was promoted to Major and assigned as the Chief Quartermaster for the Mountain Department in May 1861. On Jul 5, 1862 he received a commission of Colonel, US Volunteers and was assigned to the staff of Major General John Pope as an Aide-de-Camp. Detailed first as Chief Quartermaster for General Pope's Army of Virginia, when that force was absorbed into the Army of the Potomac following the Union defeat at the August 1862 Battle of Bull Run, he was assigned first as Chief Quartermaster for the Department of the Northwest, then as Chief Quartermaster for the Memphis, Tennessee Depot. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the Regular Army in April 1864, he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the war". Mustered out of the Volunteers on May 31, 1866, he was promoted to full Colonel in the Regular Army in July 1866, and retired in 1869. He was the father-in-law of Civil War Union Army General Charles P. Stone.
