Thomas Anthony Zalner, 59, of Battle Creek, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2009 at the Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence. He was born August 9, 1949 in Battle Creek, Michigan the son of Stanley P. and Marie P. (Taylor) Zalner.

Tom graduated from Springfield High School in 1967 where he was the dual city scoring leader in basketball and baseball. He went on to play basketball at Kellogg Community College and Hillsdale College, before proudly serving his country in the Marine Corps Reserves. Tom went on to a hall of fame career in softball and was a valued employee of the Battle Creek School System for over 20 years. Most recently he had worked at the Urbandale School. Known as "Z" to his friends, Tom drew admiration from both friends and strangers on the diamond, but will forever be remembered for his selflessness and good nature.

On June 23, 1973 he was married to the former Carol Ann Popenhagen, who survives. Also surviving are two children: Leslie Zalner of Battle Creek and Joe (Anna) Zalner of Madison, WI; two grandchildren: Hannah Zalner and Damon T. Stallworth; his mother: Marie "Honey" Zalner of Battle Creek; two brothers: Stanley (Dawn) Zalner and John (Annette) Zalner, both of Battle Creek; and one sister: Judy (Ed) Conkell of Battle Creek. He was preceded in death by his father.

In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial gathering to celebrate Tom's life will be held Saturday, May 23rd from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the American Legion Post #298, 228 N. 20th Street.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence or U of M Comprehensive Cancer Center. Arrangements by the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home.
