OBITUARIES
Ex-Mayor Dies at 68
Malad - Joseph Guy Benson, 68, former Malad mayor and city councilman and a cousin of Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Taft Benson, died Saturday in Oneida County Hospital of a stroke.
Mr. Benson was born June 24, 1891, at Logan, Utah, and was graduated from Logan High School, Utah State University and Worsham College of Mortuary Science at Chicago. He taught elementary school at Arbon before opening a funeral business in Malad, which he operated for 30 years. He was a pioneer member of the Idaho Funeral Directors Assn.
He was the Oneida County registrar of vital statistics from 1939 until his death. He was mayor of Malad about 18 years ago and also served on the city council for four years. He was a member of the Malad Chamber of Commerce and was a member and past president of the Malad Lion's Club. He was also chairman of the accident division of the county Red Cross and a member of the Malad Boy Scout committee. He was also active in civil defense work during World War II.
Mr. Benson was active in the LDS Church. He was a past secretary of the Mutual Improvement Assn., past stake chorister and past president of the elders quorum.
He was a son of Joseph and Sigrid Larson Benson and married Hazel Smith on Jan. 8, 1914, at the Logan LDS Temple. He retired in 1955.
Survivors include his wife, Malad; two sons and two daughters, Ralford G. Benson, Malad; Ross I. Benson, Bitburg, Germany; Mrs. Wendell Camp, Sugar City; Mrs. Rollin McNey, Van Nuys, Calif., and 13 grandchildren.
Also surviving are two brothers and two sisters, Eugene T. Benson, Bountiful, Utah; Edson Benson, Salt Lake City; Mrs. D. L. Peck, Malad; Mrs. Hyrum J. Maughn, Ridge Crest, Calif.; and Mrs. John Hooper, Inglewood, Calif.
Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Malad Second Ward LDS Chapel with Bishop Myron Sorensen officiating. Friends may call at the Benson Funeral Home Wednesday evening and Thursday prior to services. Burial will be in the Malad City Cemetery.∼Son of
