Born in Harrison County, Texas, Mary Lee was the daughter of Sidney Witherspoon Cowling and Harriet Jane Godbold Cowling. In 1900 while living in Wichita County, Mary Lee's father was the proprietor of the hotel. She married Clarence Eugene Martin, a stenographer, in 1902 and had one daughter, Muriel Florine Martin. In 1910 they resided in Decatur, Wise County, Texas. By 1930, they had settled in Breckenridge, Stephens County, Texas.
