Perry Robert Cline was born in Catawba Co, NC. His parents were William Cline, Jr and Susannah Starr. His siblings were Jonathan Davidson, Francis Marion, Roxanna Killian, Easter Hilliard Hewitt, William Pinkney, Julius Calvin, Ruth Elizabeth Drum, Martha Lovinia and Druscilla. Perry and all his brothers were in the Civil War, two of them, W P and J Calvin were killed.

Perry served the CSA in Co A 12th NC Reg, Catawba Rifles. "He resided in Catawba Co, NC and was a wheelwright when he enlisted April 17, 1861 at the age of 18. He was wounded at Malvern Hill July 1, 1862, captured at Washington DC on July 13, 1864 and confined at Old Capitol Prison until transferred to Elmira N. Y. He was paroled on March 13, 1865...."

He first married Leona Harmon Cruthis 7 June 1869 in Bond Co, Illinois. He 2nd married Margaret Nevada Jane Shaw on 18 Dec 1887. She was the daughter of James B Shaw. This union was blessed with Goldie Long Neaves, Helen Linton, Verna Mae Bandy, Morgan Alexander, Joseph, Perry Robert, Jr, James WP, and Jennings Bryan Cline.
