James was only a toddler when his parents, sister, Luetta Jane and Grandfather, William W. Rickman crossed The Plains on the Oregon-California Trail in 1876, first settling at Ellensburg (now Gold Beach), Curry County, Oregon where they would live for nearly ten years. Most likely his mother's parents, John Danner and Rhoda Miller also came on the same journey as they are neighbors on the 1880 Census for Rogue River, Curry Co., Or.

Rickman - At the residence, 625 Thurman St., Portland, Or., James D. Rickman, aged 38 years. Funeral services will be held at Dunning & McEntee's chapel today (Wednesday), at 3 P.M. Friends respectfully invited to attend. Remains will be taken to Eugene, Or., for interment.
