James Norman Birnel, 85, Chilhowee, died Saturday morning, March 6, at the Ross Nursing Home in Warrensburg, after being in failing health for several weeks.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Cook Chapel with the Rev. Charles Truitt officiating. Burial was in the Sunset Hills Cemetery, Warrensburg, under the direction of Cook Funeral Home of Chilhowee.
Pallbears were Lawrence Smithson, Clarence Harclerode, Grover Hook, Sam Welch, Richard Albin, Eugene Marksberry and Joe Corder.
He was born July 25, 1885 at Taberville, the son of Malcolm Scott and Mary Alice Birnel. On Jan 3, 1909, he was married to Ina Mina Kitterman at the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church of which he was a member. They had recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary.
His entire life was spent as a farmer and hay baler in the Johnson county area, until his retirement twelve years ago, when he moved to Chilhowee.
Survivors include his wife, Mina, of the home; two sisters, Mrs. Oda Slifer of Pasadena, Calif., and Mrs. Maude McIlroy of Ronan, Mont.; severl nieces and nephews.
