Russell Jemmett, 89, of Firth, Idaho, died Thursday, Dec. 12, at Portneuff Valley Medical Center, Pocatello, Idaho.
Jemmett was born June 5, 1913, at Shelley, Idaho, to Henry and Elizabeth (Goddard) Jemmett and grew up in the Cedar Creek and Shelley area.
He attended Aldridge School in Cedar Creek area and then went to school in Shelley.
In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. During World War II, he was captured by the Germans and became a prisoner of war. He and two other men were the only survivors of that company of prisoners.
Jemmett received many medals for his military service and was honorably discharged in 1945.
He then moved to Silver Creek, where he logged and trapped for several years. A member of Chehalis Eagles, he had served as president. His enjoyments were beadwork and trapping.
On Oct. 21, 1966, he married Leona Belcher in Chehalis. In 1994, they moved to Firth, where his wife survives him. Also surviving are a daughter, Marilyn McPherson of Tenino; three stepsons, Danny and Ronald Davis, both of Castle Rock, and Larry Davis of Longview; a stepdaughter, Eva Joan Price of Vancouver, British Columbia; and many nieces, nephews and grandchildren.
His parents, brothers, Clifford and Frank, and sisters, Elsie Dial and Eva Jones, preceded him in death.
A funeral for Jemmett was held today at 2 p.m. at Nalder Funeral Home, Shelley, which was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in Shelley Hillcrest Cemetery.
