He emigrated to the United States in 1845, stopping first in New York, then in Detroit, Michigan, and then to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he lived until 1851. From thence he moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, and after two years, to St. Paul, Minnesota, where he followed his trade until 1862, when he enlisted in Company I, of the Eighth Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. He was in the service three years, taking part in several hard fought battles; and was mustered out on the 11th of July, 1865.
