FORT MYERS NEWS-PRESS, Feb. 23, 1932--In the midst of a period of shouting and demonstrations of religious fervor in the Church of God, East Fort Myers, Mrs. Mary Allen, 40, a member of the congregation, collapsed and fell to the floor, apparently unconscious during the worship hour on Sunday night. For some time, it was said she lay where she had fallen near the altar, while the services proceeded and the Rev. Josh Hires conducted the worship service. Then when Mrs. Allen failed to rally from what other members of the church assumed to be one of the "trances" into which followers of their faith fall sometimes when their religous zeal is stirred to a high emotional pitch, the congregation wondered. Efforts to awaken the woman failed and a telephone message to the Lee Memorial hospital said they were bringing the stricken member of the congregation for treatment. Dr. J. William Jones was at the hospital at the time and he awaited their arrival. As soon as they arrived with Mrs. Allen, it was apparent her condition was critical Her pulse was barely perceptible, it was said, and her breathing had almost ceased entirely. By the time she could be taken to a room, Mrs. Allen's heart action had stopped entirely and she was dead. Every effort was made to resuscitate her, Dr. Jones and members of the hospital organization attempting to revive the spark of her life. It was at first thought possilble that Mrs. Allen's condition might be one of suspended animation brought on by excess emotional action incident to religious excitement. When the attempt had failed and Mrs. Allen was pronounced dead beyond a possible doubt, members of the congregation waiting at the hospital said her passing away in that particular manner and at that time was "the will of God." Mrs. Allen was a widow. She had lived here for about four years. Her home was at 634 Edgewood avenue in East Fort Myers. She is survived by a son, Russell Allen, a daughter, Mrs. Claudia May Cartright, six brothers and four sisters. Funeral services will be conducted by Lawrence A. Powell at the fmaily residence at 5 o'clock this afternoon. the Rev. Josh Hires, pastor of the Church of God, will officiate. Interment will be in the Fort Myers cemetery
