"CUMPSTON, DONALD E. "Don"
Cumpston, Donald E. "Don" - Aged 74, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, January 1, 2003, at his beloved home, "Cedarvine," which he built with his own hands in Knight's Valley, California. He was born on February 9, 1928, to George and Mary (McCain) Cumpston in Golden, Colorado. At age 11, he came with his family to California and believed he had discovered Paradise.
He served in the U.S. Armed Forces in Italy right after WWII. After completing his AA degree at the College of San Mateo, he became a member of the Plumbers' Union, #467. He attended course work to become a mechanical engineer at Purdue University. Later, he worked in that capacity as superintendent for many large construction projects throughout Northern California and Nevada, including IBM, San Jose; Candlestick Park; Harrah's and the Budweiser Brewery. In the 1970s, he worked 18 months for Bechtel Corporation, helping to construct a liquefied natural gas plant in Sumatra, Indonesia. For many years he taught the plumbers' apprentice classes at College of San Mateo. He has been active in the Knight's Valley Community as he has served as President of the Volunteer Fire Department for 10 years. He was past president of the Knight's Valley Fire Department. His outdoor activities include fishing, golfing, clamming, abaloneing, playing tennis, scuba diving and water skiing; these were all pleasures he enjoyed sharing with his family. He will be missed for his quiet dignity, sense of humor and love of his family.
He is survived by his adored wife of 53 years, [living]; two daughters, [living and husband] of Napa, and [living and husband] of San Ramon; as well as seven grandchildren [living]; plus his brother Bill Cumpston of Barstow, and his sister [living] of Moreno Valley.
