During WWI Royal Denver was a Sergeant with the 80th Spruce Squadron, formed in early 1918 to build railroad lines and harvest Sitka spruce logs up to nine feet in diameter to be milled for the manufacture of wood-frame World War I airplanes.
The Spruce Squadrons were aligned with the Loyal Legion of Loggers and Lumbermen (LLLL), which engaged timber workers in the production of spruce material for airplane construction.
But after all the effort and expense, the Armistice just months later halted all railroad construction and lumbering and the men were honorably discharged.
