His family left the Baden area of Germany in 1873, traveling first to England and then departing from the Port of Liverpool, England. They where traveling in the newly built SS City of Montreal. They would travel across the ocean landing in New York City on the 6th of May 1873.
By 1880, the family now consisting of the father, mother, children John, Anna, Joseph and Frederick were living in Hartford, Connecticut.
Five years later John's father would move the family west to the open plains of Kansas. Again moving west they land in Laramie, Wyoming by 1895.
