He was a fisherman in Hant's Harbour Newfoundland as was most of his family. Came to to the United States via St. John, New Brunswick on the SS Glencoe at the age of 25 in March 1903. He crossed the border at Vanceboro, Maine with his destination listed as Boston with $60.00 in his pocket. After working in Boston for three years he came to Maine and worked on the steamer J. T. Morse for eight years and then worked with the paint crew on the Maine Central Railroad where he remained for 30 years. Between seasons he worked for local contractors.
