Samuel Veale Dies Suddenly
Is Summoned by the Grim Reaper at His Home in DeKalb on Sunday.
Former Malta Man Was a Prominent Merchant of Malta as Well as Farmer of Milan Township.

The news of the sudden death of Samuel Veale, a former well known and respected citizen of Malta, at his home in DeKalb on Sunday, came as a shock to his many friends in this vicinity who had not known that he was ill.

Samuel Veale was born at Devonshire, England, November 13, 1838, and died at his home in DeKalb, Illinois, Sunday, March 19, 1911, at the ripe age of 72 years, 4 months and 6 days. He came to Illinois in 1863 and shortly afterwards went to farming in Milan township at which he continued until about 1880 when he moved to Malta and entered the general merchandise business. In the early '90s he sold out to the late W.L. Stephens. He continued to reside in Malta until about 1897 and then went to St. Charles where he lived for several years when he moved onto a farm he had purchased near DeSmet, South Dakota, and after remaining there for several years returned to St. Charles where he continued to reside until six or seven years ago when he removed to DeKalb.

On the fifth of November 1861, he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Rowe and the fruits of that were the children hereafter mentioned. Mrs. Veale died in 1893.
On the 6th of November 1897 he was again married to Miss Cecelia DeLong, of St. Charles.
Left to mourn his death are his wife and the following children: Emily, Mrs. William Veale of Willow Range, Manitoba; Sarah Mrs. Forest Cassidy of Winnipeg; Miss Anna Veale of Winnipeg; Mrs. Ida Hart, of DeSmet, South Dakota; Albert Veale, of near Genoa; Mabel Mrs. J.I. Munn; Lillian Mrs. George K. Tanner; Cora Lina Mrs. Carl Wettstein; and Miss Elva Veale, of St. Charles.

Three sisters and two brothers also survive: John Bailey Veale of Nestleton, Ontario; Marwood Bailey Veale of Malta; Hannah, Mrs. Allen Hayes of Port Perry, Canada; Nellie, Mrs. Albert Banfield, Ellsworth, Kansas and Lizzie, Mrs. Amos Keast of Malta. All of the above were privileged to be present and attend the funeral excepting Mrs. Hayes.

Other relatives and friends present from out of town were J.W. Busby, wife and son, of Dixon, Mrs. W.J. Keast, Joe Willrett and wife, A. VanPatten and wife, Edward Johnson, John Newsham, Mrs. B.B. Smiley and Mrs. Mary Tindall, of DeKalb.

Funeral services were held at the late home at 10:00 o'clock a.m. on Wednesday 23rd of March, escorted by the Elk Lodge, of which he was a prominent member. The funeral proceeded to Malta where numerous friends and old neighbors awaited in the M.E. church. Reverend Burkett officiated and DeKalb ladies furnished the music. The pall bearers were members of the Elk Lodge. The remains were laid to rest in the family lot in the Malta Cemetery.
