Thaddeus Stevens Almond was born in Jefferson County, Alabama the second son of John Mildred and Frances Virginia (Parker) Almond. His newly married parents had migrated to Alabama in 1880 from Tracy City, Grundy Co. Tennessee. His father's two younger sisters and their husbands also made the trip. All were looking for a better life and employment in the coal mines. When he was about four years old his parents moved back to Tennessee settling in Graysville, Hamilton Co. TN. New mines were opening up in that area. It seems that they didn't stay in one camp long and Thad's boyhood life was one of moving from one coal camp to another. By the time he was old enough to work in the mines they were living in Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. As was the custom, he went to work in the coal mines at age 14. By age 18 he was on his own. At some point along the way he lost one eye to a mining accident. In 1909 he married Mattie, last name unknown, but the marriage ended before 1917. The reason why is not known. Like his father, Thad spent his life working as a coal miner. He died at the young age of 41 having contracted meningitis while working in the mines near Salt Lake City.
