Funeral for Dorothy Abel

Funeral service for Dorothy (Mrs. Oliver) Abel was held in Belle Fourche at the Methodist Church Aug 23. Mrs. Abel was killed in an automobile accident Aug 20.

Officiating the funeral was the Rev. Gary Rae.

Dorothy Evelyn Lawler was born on January 23, 1912, in Harrison, to John and Mabel Lawler. She grew up with nine brothers and sisters on a farm near Harrison. She attended school in Omaha, for a Beauty Training course and also completed a course in teachers training. She taught school for twenty years in both Nebraska and South Dakota.

Dorothy and Oliver Gilmore Abel were married on December 4, 1935, at Crawford. They moved to South Dakota on January 28, 1944, to the ranch northeast of Maurine. They left the area in May of 1964 and moved to Belle Fourche where they raised cattle and sheep.

Dorothy was active in many organizations including Eastern Star. SD Education Association, SD 4-H Leaders, Beta Sigma Phi, Methodist Women's Circle, and Shaklee Organization. She was a Sunday and Bible School teacher, a counselor for Scouts and 4-H, and a tutor for the handicapped children.

She is survived by her widower, Oliver Gilmore "Pete" Abel, the daughters, Reba Loobey, Kela Ka Rathbun, and Zelda Perez; three grandchildren, Kerry Loobey Howie, Brook D. Loobey, and Skipper Alen Williams.

Mr. and Mrs. Bryce Abel, Darcey and Amy of Security, Colo., Darold Abel and Mrs. D.P. Hamilton Harrison, drove to Belle Fourche Saturday to the funeral.
