Services will be private for Esther J. Dowling, who died Monday in Amherst, Mass. She was 90.
Mrs. Dowling was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She lived in Chicago, Arkansas, Kansas, Nebraska, Germany, France, and Omaha, Neb., before moving to Santa Cruz in 1966. She returned to Massachusetts in 1999 to be near her daughter.
Mrs. Dowling was a secretary for General Motors Corp. in Chicago and at several organizations in Omaha, including Veterans Hospital. She volunteered at the county court house and later was active in the Santa Cruz Senior Center, coordinating trips and participating in Seniorama.
Mrs. Dowling had a passion for maps and gave nearly every family member or friend an atlas at one time or another.
She is survived by son Thomas A. Dowling of Columbus, Ohio; daughter, Victoria Dowling of Pelham, Mass.; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Charles Edward Dowling, and son Stephen Dowling died before her.
