Funeral Set for William O'Brien, Decorated Soldier, Former Deputy

Lowville -- A Mass of the Resurrection will be offered for William H. O'Brien, 72, of North State Street, former Army sergeant, at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Hedwig's Church, Houseville, with Rev. Paschal Rys, pastor, officiating. Burial with full military honors will be held in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C.

Mr. O'Brien was stricken at home Wednesday morning and pronounced dead on arrival at Lewis County General Hospital.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Donald F. Virkler Funeral Home. Recitation off the rosary will be held at 8 p.m.

Surviving are his wife, Irma; three sons, Robert, Harold and Patrick, all of Lowville; two daughters, Mrs. Kevin (Doris) Morak, Lowville, RD, Mrs. Robert (Ingrid) Phelps, Albuquerque, N. M.; nine grandchildren; and two brothers, Edward, Wisconsin, and Robert, California.

A sister, Doris Halonen, died before him.

Bon (sic) in Princeton, Minn.., June 27, 1915, a son of William and Lucy Snow O'Brien, he was educated in Wisconsin schools.

He married Irma Schroeder April 5, 1950, in Heidelberg, Germany.

Mr. O'Brien entered the Army Dec. 30, 1935. After serving 21 years and 11 months, he was discharged as a sergeant first class on March 31, 1958. He had served on four continents and was awarded 11 metals, including the American and National Defense Medal, the Good Conduct Medal (bronze clasp with 5 loops), the Asiatic-Pacific Medal, the China Theater Medal, the German Occupation Medal and the African-European-Middle and Eastern Theater Medal.

Following his discharge, he settled in Lowville and from 1958 until November 1971, was a chief deputy sheriff in the Lewis County Sheriff's Department. As part of his training, he attended St. Lawrence University, Canton, and Cornell University, Ithaca.

Mr. O'Brien was a member of St. Hedwig's Church, Houseville, and a member and past grand knight of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Houseville. He was also a member of the Lewis County Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Lowville Elks Lodge and the New York State Sheriff's Association.

He was a past member of the International Association for Identification and a member of the "Old Guard" of the Third U.S. Infantry Veterans Association. He also served as a notary public for 29 years.
