Avis E. Cassidy, 85, longtime Havre resident died Tuesday, March 7, 2000 at her residence of natural causes.

Cassidy was born July 15, 1914 in Graceville, Minn. to Roy and Elfrieda (Boeger) Simpson. She attended schools in Graceville, graduating from Graceville High School.

On June 3, 1932, she married Raymond B. Keeler in Brown's Valley. They lived in Graceville for a few years and then moved to Glasgow, where he worked as a conductor for the Great Northern Railroad.

The family moved to Havre in 1939. He died Oct. 28, 1954.

Cassidy attended Northern Montana College for two years and obtained her associate degree in cosmetology. She operated Avis' Beauty Shop from her basement for 5 years. She also was a telephone switchboard operator for Sacred Heart Hospital and later the Northern Montana Hospital.

On Oct. 3, 1959, she married George E. Cassidy. He died in 1978.

The Cassidys lived made their home in Havre and had a cabin in the Benchmark area that they liked to visit. They also had a summer cabin the Bear Paw Mountains where they spent their summers fishing.

Cassidy loved to garden and was a good pool player and belonged to a pool league. In her youth, she hunted wild game. She was active in Eagles and was a charter member of the Eagles Auxiliary. She also enjoyed sewing.

Cassidy was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, daughter, Rae Kathryn, and three brothers.

Survivors include son, Graham Keeler of Helena; daughter, Jeanne Johnson of Boise, Idaho; brothers, Charles Simpson of Wheaton; 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews.
