Winifred was the sixth child born to James and Sarah Mason Huey. She had five older siblings, Elizabeth Huey Cockrell, Dorcus Huey Sims, Mason Huey, John Huey, Sr.and Susan Huey Colvin and a younger sister, Jane Huey Coats Maddox. Winifred was about twenty-eight years old in 1812 when she migrated with her parents and extended family from South Carolina to northern Louisiana. Three years later she married Charles Pipes. She was about thirty-two when her first child was born. She was almost eighty years old when she died.
