He was given a medical discharge at Jacksonville, Florida on 24 Oct 1898.

On 1 Nov 1908 in Ashford, Pierce Co, Washington, Fred married Mrs. Annie Isabelle (Wheeler) Stewart, daughter of James P Wheeler and Annie M Tidd . She was born about 1872 in Nevada and died on 7 Dec 1925 at Eatonville, Pierce Co, Washington. They both worked as station agents for the railways

Fred was admitted to the Pacific Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers on 8 Jan 1927 in Sawtelle, Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co, California.
