Jacob Giem passed away at his home in Kellogg on Friday afternoon, July 18th, at 5:30 o'clock. Death was due to heart trouble. Mr. Giem was born in Ohio, seventy-three years ago. He came to Wabasha and enlisted in Co. K., 9th Minn. on August 17, 1862. The regiment did garrison duty at Fort Snelling and later on assisted in guarding Indian prisoners at South Bend under Gen. Sibley. It was on duty at the "great hanging" in Mankato. In the spring of 1863 it was ordered South where it took part in the Battles of Guntown, Tupelo, Nashville and the Missouri and Mobile campaigns. Mr. Giem was mustered out on August 24, 1865. While living in Wabasha Mr. Giem worked most of the time for John Brindle. He moved to Kellogg about sixteen years ago. He is survived by four sons and one daughter: Peter Giem of Weaver, Jacob and William of Butte, Montana and Mrs. Frank LaMont of Alberta, Canada. Mrs. Giem died about thirty years ago. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock with services at the Methodist church, Wabasha, Rev. Thos. Billing officiating. Interment was made in Riverview cemetery.
