Fred S. Rice was born in Scott Co. Indiana on November 19, 1873, and departed this life at his home in Grand Coulee on April 22, 1947, at the age of 73 years, 5 months and 3 days.
He lived the early part of his life in Indiana on his father's farm. He came to the state of Washington in 1904 and homesteaded in Douglas County just six miles from the site of Grand Coulee Dam until 1942.
He was married in 1914 to Susie FitzSimmons who was from his home town in Indiana. To this union were born two children, Nettie (Mrs. William R. Herman) and Fredrick S. Rice, Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Rice retired from the homestead in 1942 at which time he was employed by the Bureau of Reclamation as an elevator operator. He was able to work last on the day of his death, Tuesday, April 22.
He was one of the pioneers of this area and was interested in the progress of the community. It was one of his dreams to see the Grand Coulee Dam completed and he lived to see this dream come true. He was a good neighbor, a kind and loving father an leaves many friends and relatives to mourn his departure.
The surviving relatives in this area are his wife, Susie, his daughter, Nettie, his son, Fredrick, four grandchildren, one brother, Halleck, three nephews and their families.
