Mr. Sykes enlisted in Co. E. of the 76th Ohio Regiment in 1862 and served his country faithfully and well for three years. In 1873 Mr. Sykes and family came to Iowa, settling in Clarence. Later they moved to Big Rock and came to Oxford Mills in 1875, where he resided till the time of his death. While in the army he experienced religion and united with the Presbyterian church, and later with the M. E. church at Oxford Mills. He was a kind, devoted husband, a loving father and an honorable citizen.
The funeral services were held from the house, Friday, July 5th, at 9:30 a.m., Rev. J. S. Westfall officiating, after which the body was laid at rest in the Oxford Junction cemetery, the G. A. R. Post of Wyoming of which organization he was a member having charge of the burial services.
