Michael was born in Jefferson County, Ohio to Michael Sr. and Peggy (Hatfield) Hites while the family was making its' way to the land given to his grandfather John Hites in Holmes County for service in the American Revolution. In 1844, He married Rebecca Helfinstine in Pickaway County, Ohio. By 1850, they moved to Hardin County where his uncle John Jr. had established a settlement with the John Hatfield clan, who had been traveling with the Hites family since their days in Maryland. By 1860, Michael had moved his family to Blue Ridge Township in Piatt County, Illinois where Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas prepared their presidential debates in 1858. He also traveled to Butler County, Iowa on occasion to visit his half-brother Joseph David and his uncle Christian who was one of the founders of Hitesville. There is debate as to whether their youngest son was born in Iowa or Illinois as a result of of their travels. He died when David Walter was only 5 years old.
