In 1833, the family of Thomas Smithers, Sr., moved to McDonough County, and engaged in farming. His wife died in McDonough County. Mr. Smithers lived a few years in Rushville, until his death in 1865.
There were 8 children born to them, 7 living in 1885. John B., Mary J., wife of Jefferson Pennington, Susan, wife of Benjamin Vail, Robert of Galesburg, James, Joseph, and Thomas.
