Ellen was the seventh of 14 children of Edward S. Whitman and Emma Frederick Lowder Whitman. She was baptized at home on May 23, 1905 by the minister of Saint Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ferndale, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania and was confirmed in the church on Mar. 31, 1917. She grew up in Nockamixon Twp.

As a young adult, she lived in Easton, Northampton Co., Pennsylvania and worked as a seamer in a hosiery mill. She later moved to Philadelphia and worked as an operator at a textile mill.

Ellen passed away at the Cheltenham Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center, Philadelphia.

She shares a gravestone with seven other family members.
