"LaRue G "Buck" Buchanan, 74, of Royal Oak Court [Vero Beach, FL] died Sunday at his summer residence in Broadalbin, N.Y. after a long illness.
Born in Hagaman, Mr. Buchanan was a 1936 graduate of the Wilbur H Lynch High School [Class President] in Amsterdam, N.Y. He later graduated from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. with a bachelor's degree in government and economics.
During World War II, he served with the Navy as an aircraft carrier pilot of a Grumman Avenger torpedo bomber aboard the USS Yorktown, Essex, Intrepid and Enterprise in Asia and the Pacific.
He fought in the battles of Wake and Truk among other campaigns attaining the rank of lieutenant commander.
His wife Edna "Kay" Peterson Buchanan, whom he married May 8, 1943, died in 1987. His brother, Lauren R Buchanan died Jan 6.
Survivors include a son, LaRue B. Buchanan of Voorhees, N.J.; two daughters, Cathay Breglia of Mayfield, N.Y., and Susan Lane of Santa Monica, Calif.; four grandchildren; and a great grandson.
A service will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Reformed Church, Hagaman.
Spring burial will be in Hagaman cemetery."
