Turlock Police Officer Willert was shot and killed while responding to an armed robbery alarm at the Western Union Bank in Turlock at 0740 hours. Two other officers were questioning a man in a nearby parking lot who matched the description of the suspect. As Officer Willert walked past the bank window the actual suspects, who were still inside, opened fire and struck Officer Willert in the head.

The other officers rushed to Officer Willert's aid and returned fire. Two suspects were taken into custody near the scene, but another managed to escape the scene. A long pursuit ended with the suspect being shot. This individual is serving a life sentence.

Officer Willert had been with the agency for five years and was survived by his wife, Connie and three-year-old daughter, Wendy.

Officer Willert is honored at the Stanislaus County Peace Officer Memorial in Lakewood Memorial Cemetery, The California State Peace Officer Memorial in Sacramento, CA, and the National Peace Officer Memorial in Washington, D.C., Panel 21-E, Line 10.
