George Manning Ayars was born in 1854 in Shiloh, New Jersey. George came to Michigan with his parents in 1864 after living in Clarence, New York. They settled in the Pewamo region of central Michigan. George married Mary F. Wood on July 2, 1884 in Big Rapids, Michigan, he was 30 and she was 20 years old. George and Mary lived in Paris Township, now Kentwood, Sadly they had two children die Clyde at 8 days and Gertie a stillborn. Then more tragically Mary died at the early age of 26. She was interred with her parents plots in Irving Township Cemetery, Barry Co. Records show that George worked as a travel agent, canvasser, carpenter, and nurseryman. At the nursery he worked with a Peter Pearce. Peter had an older sister who had recently become a widowed mother at age 23. George was a 39 year old widower when he married "Kitty" in 1893. The first child born was named George Melvin Ayars, having the middle name of Kitty's first husband, Melvin Peel. A second child was born, John Russell and daughter Elsie in 1905. George like his family was a strong Seventh Day Adventist. George died in 1912 at age 57 and was buried next to Kitty's first husband.
