Jesse N. Cornwell of Forestville Was Owner of Numerous Mills in State.
Jesse N. Cornwell, 98, Confederate veteran and former mill owner, died Saturday afternoon at his home in Forestville, Va.
Born in Warrenton, Va., December 27, 1836, he served in the Confederate Army under Col. Alec Monroe. During his active years, Mr. Cornwell was the owner of numerous mills throughout the state.
Among the many surviving relatives is his nephew, John Jay Cornwell, a former Governor of West Virginia.
Sarah Elizabeth Shelley of Hampshire County, W. Va., whom he married in 1865, died in 1921, and a son, Sergt. George B. Cornwell of the metropolitan police of Washington, died a few years ago.
Besides a son and daughter, Daniel D. and Miss Maggie Cornwell of Forestville, he leaves 10 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at the home today at 2 p.m. followed by burial in Arnon Chapel at Forestville.
