OBITUARY: [Newspaper: Beaumont Enterprise, March 7, 2004]

Dr. Marvin Louis McLaughlin, retired professor and Dean at Lamar University, died on Thursday, March 4, 2004 at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 8, 2004 at Claybar Kelley-Watkins Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robert Shield from Trinity United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
Dr. McLaughlin, born November 7, 1914, in Leon County, Texas, was the son of Robert Andrew McLAUGHLIN and Margaret HARRISON McLaughlin.

After graduating from high school as valedictorian, he attended John E. Brown University (a junior college at that time) and graduated from there as salutatorian. He obtained a Bachelor's degree from Sam Houston State University, a Master's degree from the University of Texas, and a Doctor's degree from the University of Houston. After obtaining a Bachelor's degree, Dr. McLaughlin worked for eight years as a teacher and principal in several public schools. Then, after serving in the army for four years as a private, corporal, sergeant, and Lieutenant, he was employed at Lamar University, where he remained for 37 years. While at Lamar he served as Coordinator of Veterans Education, Administrative Assistant, Dean of Men, Professor of Education, Dean of the College of Graduate Studies, and Dean of the College of Education. During his lifetime, Dr. McLaughlin served in various leadership roles. He was President of the Lamar Chapter of the American Association of University Professors, President of the Lamar Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Secretary-Treasurer of the Texas Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, President of the South Park Beaumont Rotary Club, and the first President of the Lamar University Retirees Association.

Dr. McLaughlin is survived by his wife, Nelle Oliver Mang McLaughlin; a son, James Alan McLaughlin; and grandsons, David McLaughlin of Nokomis, Florida, Michael McLaughlin of Siesta Key, Florida, and Cliff McLaughlin of Las Vegas, Nevada.

His first wife Nell Turner McLaughlin preceded Dr. McLaughlin in death. The family wishes to thank the staff, nurses, and doctors at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital of Beaumont for their wonderful care and devotion.
