OBITUARY
Manuel Victorino Sylvia, 95, husband of the late Mary (Enos) Sylvia, died this morning at Acshnet Hosptial after an illness of one year.
Born in St George Madeira Islands, Mr Sylvia came to this country on the liner Veronica 72 years ago and made his home in Hathaway Road, New Bedford, and 14 Russels Mills Road, South Dartmouth until August when he moved to the home of his son Joseph V of 169 Rounds Street.
Mr Sylvia conducted a farm in Hathaway Road for more than 40 years and it was not until he was past 75 that he retired and moved to South Dartmouth. In 1940, he made application for his first citizenship papers in Superior Courst here. Illness prevented him from taking out his final papers. He was a member of the Monte Pio Society a charter member of the Holy Ghost Society and a Communicant of St John the Baptist Church.
Surviving besides his son, John, are three other sons, Matthew and Manuel V of this city and John V of Middleboro, two sisters, Mrs. Theresa Swartz of Darmouth and Mrs. Marion Braga of South Dartmouth; 21 grandchildren and 26 g grandchildren.
