"Death of Abisha Risk
Early Resident of St. John and Veteran of Civil War Died Wednesday, at Age of Nearly Eighty-two Years
A highly respected character in the early history of St. John, and in the present time, has passed from among us in the death Wednesday morning of Abisha Risk at his home just south of the city.
The funeral was conducted at 10 o'clock this morning at Fairview cemetery by Elder Marion Campbell, and the following life sketch was read at the grave by Mr. John A. Morgan:
Abisha Risk, deceased, was born in Decatur County, Indiana, April 3, 1837; Died at St. John, Kansas, December 11th, 1918, being 81 years, 8 months and 8 days old. At oubreak of the Civil War he enlisted August 28, 1861 in Co. G. 7th Reg. Indiana Volunteers. He Re-enlisted Nov. 16, 1863 in Co. A. 123rd Indiana Volunteers; was honorably discharged August 25th, 1865 at Lexington, North Carolina. He served 4 years. Came to Kansas in 1865 and to St. John in 1876. Married at St. John, Kansas, to Miss Martha Campbell August 7, 1887. To this union were born: Jared Risk, now in France, and Mrs. Phoebe Drake of St. John, Kansas. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ at St. John in the year 1878 and has been a faithful member forty church (sic). He leaves, besides his wife and two children, one brother in Indiana and one sister in Kansas City, Missouri.
The pall bearers were six National Army Boys, returned from the service, whose names are: Sol Van Lieu Jr., John Kendall, Orval Andrews, Courtney Cornwell, Troy Mull and Clarence Seevers. There were nine honorary pall bearers from veterans of the Civil War, namely: A. C. Glasscock, G. W. Robinson, W. H. Vincent, David Lynch, Wm. Glasscock, Nick Davison, George Marthews, Israel Moore and John A. Morgan."
