C. Eugene "Gene" Dew, age 72, of Marshall passed away, Sunday, April 5, 2009 at Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence.
He was born to Manley and Louise (Yinger) Dew on August 16, 1936 in Monroe Township, Perry County, Ohio. When he was a year old his father passed away and his mother remarried. He was raised in the Albion/Homer/Marshall area by his mother and father Eldon and Louise Duncan. He graduated from Homer Community High School in 1955, and in 1962, he graduated from Ferris State College with a BS degree in Marketing.

He met his wife Marjorie (Schragg) Dew of Ceresco through mutual friends, and they were married in 1964 at the Ceresco Baptist Church. They resided in the Marshall area until he retired, and moved to Florida in 1996. They moved back to the Marshall area due to his illness to be close to friends and family.

In 1962 he began a banking career with Michigan National Bank in Marshall, Michigan. He held the position of Assistant Vice-President until his retirement in 1994, after 32 years of faithful service.

As a community-minded resident of Marshall, Gene served two terms on the Marshall City Council, and served as Mayor Pro-Tem in his second term. During his term on the City Council, he was a member of the Marshall City Parks and Recreation Board, as City Council Liaison. He was a member of the Marshall Industrial Trust Board, and served as Vice President, and was the City Council Representative for the Marshall Economic Development Advisory Board. He was a member of the Marshall Sister City Committee where he participated in cultural exchange of Marshall's way of life with its Sister City Koka Cho, Japan, during that time he traveled to Koka Cho. Gene was also, a member of the Calhoun County Extension Advisory Board, Bank Sponsored Representative for Cub Scout Pack 373, and a member of the Exchange Club of Marshall.

Gene attended West Eckford Church of Eckford, Michigan, and Chapel of Christian Faith in Lady Lake, Florida.

Gene loved golf, hunting, fishing, gardening, and traveling. One of his most memorable golf experiences was his "Hole In One" at the Saskatoon Golf Club, located in Alto, Michigan. After his retirement, he and his wife, and their good friends, Bill and Gloria Clayborn of Marshall, and Jim and Doretta Wilson of Homer traveled together. They traveled extensively throughout the United States including Alaska, and Hawaii. They toured the Western and Eastern part of Canada including Nova Scotia. Their Foreign travel included Japan, Germany, and France.

Gene was known as a loving husband and father, and someone who cared greatly for others. He was a well liked and respected member of the Marshall Community. He was often known to help people in various ways during his time as a bank loan officer, and will be remembered as a friend to everyone who met him.

Surviving are his wife Marge; his son Gregory (Tammy) Dew of Toledo, Ohio; brothers, James (Barb) Duncan of Homer, and Bill (Marilyn) Duncan of Marshall; sister Norma (Jim) baker of North Carolina; grandsons, Cody and Tyler Dew of Toledo, Ohio, Samuel Dew of Albany, Indiana, and Mitchell Dew of St. Mary's, Ohio; brother-in-law, Jim (Kay) Schragg of Battle Creek; mother-in-law, Marie (Schragg) Van Fleet of Marshall. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Harold Duncan, and son Douglas Dew.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00. A funeral service to celebrate the gift of his life will be held 11:00 AM Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor James Codde officiating. Interment will follow in Oakridge Cemetery.

Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence or to the West Eckford Missionary Church. Assistance with memorials is available at the funeral home
