John Eldon Milliken was born Eldon John Whitesitt. Unfortunately, his mother died when Eldon was a small child, leaving his father with 13 children to care for. Since Eldon was so young, he was sent to his mother's two unmarried sisters to be raised by them. Thereafter, he was to go by his mothers maiden name of Milliken. His father kept and raised the other twelve children who were older than Eldon at the time of their mother's death.
Upon his father's death, Eldon was left money in his father's will. Unfortunately, it was left in the name of Eldon John Whitesitt, not John Eldon Milliken. Eldon felt legally changing his name would be more trouble than it was worth and so never received the unknown sum of money his father left him.

Eldon died in his late forties of shaking palsy; quite possibly multiple sclerosis, the same disease that would later take his daughter, Aletha Milliken, in her forties

[Personal experiences of his daughter, Ruth Alyne (Milliken) Herndon. Recorded October 5, 1996.]
