Lewis Ernest LaPatra was the son of Jerry and Clara LaPatra (in truth, and according to burial records). It is unknown why his gravestone mistakenly reads "Ernest L. LaPatra." In his youth he was a short man of medium build, with blue eyes and dark brown hair.

According to Watertown City directories: Worked as a clerk in the J.L. Ross grocery store in Watertown in 1912 and lived at at 16 Scio, near his LaPatra grandparents (at 14 Scio). In the 1913 directory Lewis was listed as a "chalker" (a beginning railroad position) and lived at 716 Arsenal with his parents. The next year (1914) Louis [sic] is listed as married to Katherine E. [sic; Kathryn E. Nolan]; they lived at 20 Duffy Street, and Lewis was working as a clerk. In 1914 Louis and Kathryn moved back to 716 Arsenal with his parents. Their only child, a daughter named Glenna Kathryn LaPatra, was born 27 November 1913 in Watertown. (She became a teacher and later married Gerald V. Caswell).

By 1917 Lewis, his wife and their daughter had moved in with Lewis' widowed grandmother, Ellen Roberts, at 8 Duffy Street; Lewis was working as a yard conductor in Watertown for the New York Central Railroad and claimed an exemption from the draft during World War I on account of his dependent wife and child.

According to the 1920 census, Lewis worked as a chauffeur for a private family, while his wife, Kathryn, worked as a clerk in an office. She worked for several years in the office of Dr. E. W. Jones. Lewis and Kathryn were separated in the summer of 1922. After that Kathryn took Glenna and went to live with her mother, later with her sister. Lewis married a second wife, also named Catherine (Herd), and had four children with her: Ellen June (called "Chickee"), Paul J., Lewellyn R., and George.

Lewis eventually became a barber. In 1925 he was located in Alexandria Bay. Circa 1929-1930 he was proprietor of the Parkside Barber Shop in Watertown. In the 1960's he ran the L. LaPatra barber shop in Constantia (Oswego County), near Gayville.

He died, age 80, in the Constantia area, Oswego County, New York and was buried on 30 May 1976 at North Watertown Cemetery under the name of "Ernest L. LaPatra / son of Jerry and Clara." His gravestone is beside his parents' double marker.
