Captain Morgan, as he was known to hundreds of friends in this city, formerly was assistant chief of the local fire department and served on the force many years until he retired in 1913 after he had been injured while performing his duty.
He was a native of Richmond county and was born in 1862. He moved to Augusta when he was 25 years of age and had lived here 49 years.
Shortly after he came here he was employed as a clerk in the store of the late Dan Kerr. After working in that capacity for a short time, he became a private on the fire department and during the 27 years that he served as a firefighter, he received several promotions and ultimately became second assistant chief.
In his death this city has lost a man whose kindly nature, true Christian character and pleasing personality, had been uplifting factors in the lives of many. He was beloved as a true gentleman of the old school and his passing has cast a pall of sorrow over the entire community.
Besides his one daughter, he is survived by three sons, Dan L.and David L. Morgan, both of Augusta, and F. Norton Morgan, Clemson, S. C.; two stepsons. Fred Morgan, Wisconsin, and Evans Morgan, Atlanta: seven grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
