Aged Swedish Settler of Almelund Succumbs From Cancer Sickness

One of the aged Swedish pioneers who was an early settler in the vicinity of Almelund was removed by death last Sunday afternoon in the passing of Swen L. Liljenberg, who succumbed after an illness with internal cancer, at the age of nearly seventy-two years.

Mr. Liljenberg's health first began to decline four months ago. He continued to fail gradually and two months before his death he became confined to bed. His condition steadily became more critical and medical treatment was in vain, the end coming at two o'clock Sunday afternoon, July 4, at his home in Almelund.

Funeral Services were conducted at the family home at two p.m. yesterday, Rev. M.L. Larson of the Immanuel Lutheran Church officiating. Two beautiful hymns were sung by Prof. J.A. Wallin of Center City and burial took place in the Almelund Lutheran cemetery. Pallbearers were five son-in-laws and one nephew of the deceased, as follows: Raymond Johnson, Egnar Anderson, Chas. Anderson, Hjalmar Miller, Werner Wennberg, and Frithiof Peterson.

Swen L. Liljenberg was born in the parish of Backeryd, Blekinge Lan, Sweden, on August 7, 1854, and there he grew to manhood. In 1881 he journeyed to America, coming directly to Almelund to settle. He married Anna O. Carlson of Shafer in 1892, and the couple took up their home on the farm in the Almelund settlement where they have since resided. One of the first settlers in that community, Mr. Liljenberg became well known and was respected by a large circle of friends.

Surviving are his aged wife, three sons and seven daughters. He also leaves a sister here, Mrs. Christine Sellman of Osceola, Minnesota, besides four brothers and sisters and four other step brothers and sisters, all residing in Sweden. The children are Harold Liljenberg of St. Paul; Paul and Waldon Liljenberg, residing on the home farm; Mrs. Clara Wennberg of St. Paul; Mrs. Hilfred Miller of Center City; Mrs. Minnie Anderson, Mrs. Ranghild Anderson and Mrs. Alma Johnson , all living in St. Paul; and Ethel and Mildred Liljenberg at home.

A large circle of old friends and acquaintances join with the Press in extending condolences to the bereaved family.
