William Alcorn was born in Ohio on January 12, 1838 to Finley Alcorn and Harriet. He married Amanda McClane/McLain on June 14, 1865 in Wayne County, Indiana. The 1880 census shows him living in Hamilton County, Indiana at 116 Logan Street and he is married to Amanda. His father was born in Kentucky and his mother in Ohio. His occupation in 1880 was Grocer.

His wife Amanda was born on February 15, 1848 to John and Mary McClane. William's brother Charles E. Alcorn is listed on the US Quaker Meeting Records, 1681-1935 recording the birth of his son, Fredric I. Alcorn born April 23, 1880. Mother's name Huldah Fouts born December 30, 1859. Charles was born January 4, 1853.

On October 9, 1861 he was enlisted into the Union Side, Ohio Company M 5th Cavalry at the age of 23.

On January 7, 1862 he was enrolled into the 8th Cavalry, Regiment 39. He was recruited and mustered out at Indianapolis, Indiana on March 8, 1866.

On June 23, 1875 a Civil War Pension was listed for William Alcorn from Unit G 82 Ohio Infantry.

William died at the age of 61 on April 22, 1899 in Dublin, Wayne County, Indiana.
