Drinks Carbolic Acid
Takes Draught Through Mistake - Dies In Few Hours
Andrew Jackson Ball, of Weems, youngest son of Mrs. Mary Ball, took a large swallow of carbolic acid through mistake Saturday night about 10:30 o'clock and died in less than four hours afterwards. Mr. Ball was a mate on fishing steamer Emily A. Foote, of the Carters Creek works, and was on his way home in company with a shipmate. Upon leaving the barber shop at Weems he remarked that he was feeling badly and thought he would take some Jamaica ginger and taking a phial from his pocket turned it up to his head. He immediately asked his companion to strike match and see what he had dropped for it was burning him up. It was then that the mistake was discovered and he was taken to the store of W. A. Dameron & Bros. and Dr. Newbill summoned, but as all this took an hour or more time it was of no avail. It is believed a mistake was made in selling Mr. Ball the fluid. He had another bottle on his person at the time.
Besides his mother, Mr. Ball is survived by two brothers – W. A. And G. L. Ball, Weems - five sisters - Mrs. Jno. Wm. Chowning, Mrs. P. Eilskov, Mrs. H. C. Daniel, Mrs. W. T. Jones and Mrs. J. L. Connellee. Interment Monday morning at Weems Presbyterian church.
