Baptized St. Dunstan in the East, London, 12 January 1605/6, son of Thomas Mathews (On 18 March 1650/1, "Joan Mathew" assigned "her share of £100 in the Irish Adventure to her son James, 'of Yarmouth in New England, in the parts beyond the seas' On 19 August 1653, Nicholas Blake wrote to Alderman Michael Herring "[p]raying him to allow Blake to be joined with his lot in and to draw the lots of Thomas Mathew, Blake's father-in-law; of John Lake, who is in the Barbadoes; and of James, brother to Tho[ma]s Mathew, who lives in New England" In his will of 3 May 1638, "Thomas Mathewe, citizen & skinner of London," included bequests to "my eldest son Thomas Mathewe," to "my son James Mathewe the sum of forty pounds if he be living at the time of my decease & to his son Thomas Mathewe" and to "my loving wife Joane Mathewe." In her will of 25 March 1653, "Joane Mathewe of the parish of Dunstan in the East in London, widow," included bequests to "my son Thomas Mathew," to "my son James Mathew and to his children or so many of them as shall be living at the time of my decease," and to "my grandaughter Mary Blake wife of Nicholas Blake," along with a separate bequest to "my said son James and to his heirs & executors and administrators that sum of one hundred pounds which I have sent and adventured upon the propositions for Ir[e]land with all the benefit, profit, proceed and interest thereof and all such lands which shall at any time hereafter be laid out, allotted and appointed for me in Ir[e]land or elsewhere.")
Yeoman from London who came to Massachusetts Bay in 1634 (based on admission that year as a Charlestown inhabitant). First settled in Charlestown; moved to Yarmouth in 1639. Died in Yarmouth MA, 26 February 1684/5 (as "[blank] Mathues").
