George L. Britton was a Republican and ran on the Republican ticket along with Ulysses S. Grant in October of 1872. Grant was running for President, Henry Wilson for Vice-President, and George L. Britton ran for 2nd district Coroner in Trenton, New Jersey. George was the coroner and well respected for his job performance.

George L. Britton was the First Police Chief Justice of Trenton, New Jersey and served many times as Justice of the Peace.

George was a private in Company C, New Jersey Volunteers in the Civil War.

George was well known as a good story teller and had the nickname "Squire". He was also a member of a quartette of vocalists. Other members of the group were: Al Reed, a Justice of the Supreme Court and George A. Bennett a cigar store owner.

He was the son of Charles H. Britton and Anna. George died in the city of Camden at the age of 58.
