Wilke is one of three sons for parents Gottfried Wilken Decker and Heimke Maria Rottgers, born in Roggenstede, Ostfriesland, Preussen in 1820. He was baptized 9 Sep 1820 in Roggenstede, Ostfriesland, Preussen.

He married Heimke Katharina Oelrichs on May 30, 1849 in Ochtersum, Ostfriesland, Preussen. They had five children: Rienelt; Maria; Gottfried; Johana; Olrich.

In 1852 Wilke lost his sight. The family immigrated from Bremen, Germany to Baltimore, Maryland, arriving on June 3, 1867. In 1870 the family was living in Nebraska, Illinois and Wilke was a farmer. In 1873 they moved to Danforth, Illinois.
