Mrs. George Decker Died Sunday

Mrs. George Decker, of Gilman, who was very low as we went to press last week, died at her home last Sunday morning at about 6 o'clock, after an illness of about 2 weeks, from pneumonia.

From the beginning it was apparent that she would not recover, though she battled with the ravages of the disease tolerably well considering her age.

The passing away of Mrs. Decker again brings before us the uncertain conditions of life and the unexpected works of death, when the following facts are considered.

About a month ago, when both were in good health considering their age, Mr. Decker was suddenly taken down with a stroke of paralysis, and his condition since that time has been critical. The left half of his body was made useless, and most of the time since that time has been unconscious. It is only at times that he recognizes his relatives and realizes that his wife has passed away. He is perfectly helpless and must be cared for like an infant child.

While those who were constantly at his bedside expected death any time, an unexpected change of affairs took place when Mrs. Decker was taken down and died, while the condition of the husband and father remained unchanged. Since the beginning of her husband's illness Mrs. Decker was constantly at his bedside administering to his wants, and providing for his comforts with all the energies which she possessed. Neglect and exposures without any thought for herself while caring for her husband weakened her condition which caused her death, thus the relatives were called upon to take away the mother, who up until the last two weeks enjoyed good health, while the father still remains in the same condition.

Mrs. Decker was born in Germany in the year 1834, making her 77 years of age. Her maiden name was Heyen. She was married to George Decker about 53 years ago. During their earlier years of wedded life they settled near Pekin and later moved to Danforth, where they resided for a number of years. Some years ago, they moved to Gilman, to live a retired life, and have since made that place their home.

She is survived by her husband and eight children, four daughters and four sons, namely, Mrs. Ida Decker, of Texas, Mrs. Otto Heise of Indiana, Mrs. George Janssen of this place, and Mrs. Hanlon; and George, Rob and William of Gilman and John of this place.

Funeral services were held at the Evangelical Church of Danforth, Wednesday, conducted by Rev. C.S. Fehr. Interment was made in Danforth Cemetery.
